According to the American ASTM standard test, the water absorption rate of waterproof gypsum board is 5%. According to the Chinese national standard (GB/T 9775-2008), the surface water absorption of water-resistant paper-faced gypsum board should not exceed 160 grams, and the water absorption rate should not exceed 10%.

Water-resistant paper-faced gypsum board is suitable for use in places where the continuous relative humidity does not exceed 95%, such as toilets and bathrooms. However, it should be noted that waterproof gypsum board should not be directly exposed to a humid environment or soaked for a long time. Its function is to prevent moisture rather than waterproofing, and it cannot prevent direct soaking situations such as water leakage from upstairs.

To ensure its waterproof, scrub-resistant, and oil fume-resistant properties, special waterproofing treatment should be carried out on the board joints and the base layer during construction, and the entire board should be coated with waterproof latex paint. [3] All nail holes should be treated with anti-rust paint.

Waterproof gypsum board also has good sound insulation performance, thanks to its unique cavity structure. Besides water-resistant/waterproof gypsum board, functional gypsum boards also include moisture-resistant gypsum board (using high-quality water-resistant paper to enhance moisture resistance) and formaldehyde-decomposing gypsum board (adsorbing and decomposing formaldehyde in the air by adding formaldehyde-removing structures and decomposing agents).

Currently, functional gypsum boards are developing towards green and high-performance directions. New products such as humidity-regulating, antibacterial, and mildew-resistant gypsum boards are continuously improving in performance, and the market size continues to grow. The application of nanomaterials (such as nano-silica and graphene) is expected to further improve the strength, water resistance, and other indicators of gypsum boards. The demand for gypsum products with special functions such as air purification and humidity regulation is increasing daily.
