Functional gypsum board can be used in high-humidity environments such as kitchens, bathrooms, shower rooms, and laundry rooms. Water-resistant gypsum board is moisture-proof and steam-proof. However, its primary function is moisture and steam protection; it cannot prevent direct immersion damage caused by leaks from upstairs neighbors. When used in bathrooms, it is essential to ensure the upstairs waterproofing is intact. If internal leaks are difficult to detect after installation, the gypsum board may powder.

When using water-resistant gypsum board ceilings in damp environments such as kitchens and bathrooms, the joints, corners, and base layer must be treated with water-resistant putty. All nail holes must be coated with anti-rust paint. The exterior must be coated with a waterproof paint, such as waterproof latex paint. Before installation, the locations of electrical appliances, such as lights and bathroom heaters, must be planned, and holes must be drilled in the gypsum board to pre-install wiring.

Access panels must be provided in kitchen and bathroom gypsum board ceilings. The location of the access panel should be designed for concealment and easy access; the location of electrical appliances can be used as an access panel.

Gypsum board is also commonly used to create TV background walls. Gypsum board TV background walls are lightweight, fireproof, moisture-proof, easy to process, and simple to install. New types of resin-imitation waterproof gypsum board are high-strength, stain-resistant, and easy to clean, making them one of the ideal materials for decorative walls.
